Qur'an and Sunnah Evidence

Al-Baqarah 2:43

And establish prayer and give zakah and bow with those who bow [in worship and obedience].

Sahih International · Zakah is repeatedly paired with Salah as a core act of worship, not an optional add-on.

Al-Baqarah 2:267

O you who have believed, spend from the good things which you have earned and from that which We have produced for you from the earth. And do not aim toward the defective therefrom, spending [from that] while you would not take it [yourself] except with closed eyes. And know that Allah is Free of need and Praiseworthy.

Sahih International · Zakah/charity should be given from wealth of genuine value, not from what one would not want oneself.

At-Tawbah 9:60

Zakah expenditures are only for the poor and for the needy and for those employed to collect [zakah] and for bringing hearts together [to Islam] and for freeing captives [or slaves] and for those in debt and for the cause of Allah and for the stranded traveler — an obligation imposed by Allah. And Allah is Knowing and Wise.

Sahih International · Defines the eight categories eligible to receive Zakah.

At-Tawbah 9:103

Take, [O Muhammad], from their wealth a charity by which you purify them and cause them increase, and invoke [Allah's blessings] upon them. Indeed, your invocations are reassurance for them. And Allah is Hearing and Knowing.

Sahih International · Zakah purifies and increases wealth — a description of its spiritual function, not merely a transfer.

At-Tawbah 9:34–35

O you who have believed, indeed many of the scholars and monks devour the wealth of people unjustly and avert [them] from the way of Allah. And those who hoard gold and silver and spend it not in the way of Allah — give them tidings of a painful punishment. The Day when it will be heated in the fire of Hell and seared therewith will be their foreheads, their flanks, and their backs, [it will be said], "This is what you hoarded for yourselves, so taste what you used to hoard."

Sahih International · A severe warning concerning hoarding gold and silver without fulfilling the rights (including Zakah) due on it.

Where contemporary assets or financial arrangements require jurisprudential interpretation, this calculator identifies the methodology used rather than presenting a disputed ruling as an undisputed textual command.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Zakat?

Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam — an obligation on qualifying Muslims to give a portion of their qualifying wealth to eligible recipients once specific conditions (Nisab and Hawl) are met.

Who has to pay Zakat?

Financially capable, adult Muslims who hold qualifying wealth at or above the Nisab threshold for a full lunar year (Hawl).

What is Nisab?

Nisab is the minimum qualifying amount of wealth at which Zakat becomes due, calculated against the value of gold or silver.

What is the gold Nisab?

20 dinars (classical count). Converting this to a modern gram figure is a calculation-based conversion, configured by the organization — see the Sources page for the exact figure used.

What is the silver Nisab?

200 dirhams / 5 awqiyah (classical count) — see the Sources page for the modern gram conversion used.

Is Zakat 2.5%?

2.5% (one-fortieth) applies to qualifying monetary wealth (cash, gold, silver) once conditions are met. Livestock and agricultural produce follow different, separately-established rates.

Is Zakat payable on gold jewellery?

This is a matter of genuine scholarly disagreement. This calculator uses whichever methodology Muhammadiyya Network's Islamic authority has approved — until confirmed, results involving jewellery are labeled as an estimate rather than a definitive figure.

Is Zakat payable on my house?

No. A primary residence you live in is not counted as Zakatable monetary wealth.

Is Zakat payable on my car?

No, a personal-use vehicle is not counted as Zakatable wealth.

Is Zakat payable on savings?

Yes — cash and bank balances held at or above Nisab for a full lunar year are Zakatable.

Is Zakat payable on shares?

Yes, but it depends on your purpose. Shares held for short-term resale are Zakatable at full market value. For long-term income investments, Zakat applies only to an estimated proportion representing the underlying Zakatable assets — see the "Investments" tab of this calculator.

Can I deduct my debts?

The treatment of debts and liabilities in Zakat calculations is subject to scholarly differences. This calculator clearly discloses which methodology it applied to your result.

Who can receive Zakat?

Only the eight categories named in Qur'an 9:60: the poor, the needy, its administrators, those whose hearts are reconciled, freeing captives, those in debt, the cause of Allah, and the stranded traveller.

What if I am below Nisab?

You do not currently owe Zakat on that wealth.

What if I don't know the value of my gold?

Enter the weight (in grams) and purity (karat) — the calculator uses the current market price to work out the value for you.

How is today's gold price calculated?

It is fetched from a live market-data provider (GoldAPI.io) and converted into your selected currency. The price and its timestamp are always shown alongside the result.

Is Zakat payable on my livestock?

Yes — freely-grazing livestock (sheep/goats, cattle, camels) reaching the species-specific Nisab count and held for a full lunar year are Zakatable per the Prophetic schedule; see the "Livestock" tab. Commercially fed/traded livestock may instead fall under Business Zakat rules.

Is Zakat payable on my crops?

Yes, at harvest — once the Nisab (5 wasq) is reached, with no Hawl requirement unlike monetary wealth. The rate depends on irrigation method: 10% for naturally-watered produce, 5% for artificially-irrigated produce.

This calculator is provided as an educational and calculation aid based on the Qur'an, authentic Sunnah and the methodology identified within the calculator. Complex financial circumstances may require individual scholarly assessment. Muhammadiyya Network recommends consulting a qualified Islamic scholar for cases involving complex investments, business structures, debts, inheritance, disputed ownership or other circumstances not straightforwardly addressed by the calculator.
