Al-Baqarah 2:43

And establish prayer and give zakah and bow with those who bow [in worship and obedience].” — Sahih International

Zakah is repeatedly paired with Salah as a core act of worship, not an optional add-on.

Al-Baqarah 2:267

O you who have believed, spend from the good things which you have earned and from that which We have produced for you from the earth. And do not aim toward the defective therefrom, spending [from that] while you would not take it [yourself] except with closed eyes. And know that Allah is Free of need and Praiseworthy.” — Sahih International

Zakah/charity should be given from wealth of genuine value, not from what one would not want oneself.

At-Tawbah 9:60

Zakah expenditures are only for the poor and for the needy and for those employed to collect [zakah] and for bringing hearts together [to Islam] and for freeing captives [or slaves] and for those in debt and for the cause of Allah and for the stranded traveler — an obligation imposed by Allah. And Allah is Knowing and Wise.” — Sahih International

Defines the eight categories eligible to receive Zakah.

At-Tawbah 9:103

Take, [O Muhammad], from their wealth a charity by which you purify them and cause them increase, and invoke [Allah's blessings] upon them. Indeed, your invocations are reassurance for them. And Allah is Hearing and Knowing.” — Sahih International

Zakah purifies and increases wealth — a description of its spiritual function, not merely a transfer.

At-Tawbah 9:34–35

O you who have believed, indeed many of the scholars and monks devour the wealth of people unjustly and avert [them] from the way of Allah. And those who hoard gold and silver and spend it not in the way of Allah — give them tidings of a painful punishment. The Day when it will be heated in the fire of Hell and seared therewith will be their foreheads, their flanks, and their backs, [it will be said], "This is what you hoarded for yourselves, so taste what you used to hoard."” — Sahih International

A severe warning concerning hoarding gold and silver without fulfilling the rights (including Zakah) due on it.
